Time to start thinking about breeding

What is the purpose?

When you start considering breeding your mare, have you thought about why?

Has your mare been injured, is she getting older, or is she no longer suitable as a working horse? Or would you simply like to have a foal from your mare or her bloodline?

Do you plan to keep the foal yourself, or are you considering selling it?

They are many questions to ask yourselft before deciding to breed a foal.

Which qualities do you want to preserve - and what would you like to improve?

When choosing a stallion, it's important to look at your mare's qualities as well as any weaknesses.

What are her strenghts, and what would you like to improve in the next genaration?

You can never completely "compensate for" a weakness simply by choosing the opposite trait in the stallion. For example, if your mare has a short back, choosing a stallion with a long back is not necessarily the right solution. Instead, the aim should be to choose a stallion with a correct, well-balanced conformation.
